What is WSL?

  1. Since VS Code 1.34 (April 2019) a remote extension has been introduced to develop into WSL: Basically, a server instance of VS Code is started into WSL, allowing you to use all the WSL tools (e.g. Git) from your client instance on Windows.
  2. Workaround that helped me is to restart WSL like this: source.bashrc or restart terminal. Then you can happily play code in wsl2-ubuntu environment or terminal of VSCode. In my case I am using Debian and echo%PATH% did not output anything. For Debian, /etc/profile contributed to this problem. Here is the path definition in /etc/profile if.
  3. To get started with using WSL in VS Code, you'll need to download the Remote - WSL extension from the Extension Marketplace. You'll also need WSL and a Linux distribution installed. We recommend using WSL 2, which is the newest version of WSL, as you will benefit from significant performance advantages over WSL 1. Check out Remote - WSL in action.
  4. When using a remote connection, Visual Studio builds C Linux projects on the remote machine. It doesn't matter if it's a physical machine, a VM in the cloud, or WSL. To build the project, Visual Studio copies the source code to your remote Linux computer. Then, the code gets compiled based on Visual Studio.

In the WSL terminal, make sure you are in the helloWorld folder, and type in 'code.' To launch Visual Studio Code. Argument tells VS Code to open the current folder. Note: If this command does not work, you may need to restart your terminal, or you may not have added VS Code to your path when it was installed.

The Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) lets you run a Linux environment, including command-line tools and applications, directly on Windows, without the overhead of a traditional virtual machine or dual boot setup.

WSL especially helps web developers and those working with Bash and Linux-first tools (for example, Ruby and Python) to use their tools on Windows and ensure consistency between development and production environments.
